commissions

I welcome commissions and the opportunity they offer to make bespoke rugs in own my particular style that incorporate colours and motifs of your choice.

here are some possibilities:

  • I can design rugs to incorporate pieces of your own fabrics, e.g. material from old well loved worn garments, which may trigger special memories.

  • I can base a design upon a child's drawing.

  • The rug could incorporate some text that has some personal meaning: a line from a song, a phrase, a commemoration.

  • Rugs may be made to  commemorate a happy event such as a birth/ a wedding/a new chapter in life.

the commissioning process

Probably the best way to start is to send me a message, emailing me via my blog. You could write and let me know which of my rugs you particularly like and if you have any initial thoughts re. size, design and colours. If you would like to include your tel. no. it could be good for us to have a chat!

contract
Once we have established what you would like your rug to look like (and whether I'm the person to supply it!) we are ready to complete a simple contract which I can email to you. It's not as daunting as it might sound! Written agreements are a way of making sure that we are 'on the same page', so to speak, making certain that I know what you expect and making certain you will be satisfied. The contract will put the details into writing re. size, colours, design, materials used and it also establishes the terms, such as costs, deposit, payment, lead time and method/cost of delivery.

my fee
I charge on a sliding scale of £75 - £125  per square foot, according to the simplicity/complexity of the design and the hooking style. Once you have selected a design style and we've agreed on hooking style to be used (e.g. 'primitive' hooking as seen in my 'Bird on a Twig' rug uses wider strips of fabric resulting in larger hooked loops and is a quicker hooking method than one which uses narrower strips of finer fabrics for a more detailed effect as seen within the butterfly wings of my 'Butterfly' rug) some rugs of course use a combination of the two styles - and once we have agreed on materials, the edging to be used and the rug size, then I can give you a costing. Costings include, telephone calls, sometimes meeting with you (depending on location and scale of commission) research, design, hand hooking, edging and finishing the rug. The costings don't include delivery. I can advise on delivery costs/methods on an individual basis and once agreed they will be detailed on the contract.

deposit
After the contract has been signed by both of us, a deposit is payable of 25%. Once this is received, I can proceed with making your rug.

making your rug
During the making of your rug, I can keep you updated with photos of its progress if you would like me to (although some people like the surprise element and prefer to wait until the rug is completed before viewing photographs!)

final payment and delivery
After you have viewed photos of the finished rug and are hopefully happy with it, the final balance of payment is due on receipt of invoice. Once payment has been received, the rug will be delivered to you. If you are local to my area, sometimes it can be nice to hand deliver the rug to you personally or meet at a mutually convenient venue. In the rare event that a client would not want to accept the completed rug, the deposit would be non-returnable, reflecting time and materials already spent.
